Courthouse
Court Security is a Support Services Unit responsible for maintaining security in all Thomas County Courthouse facilities. The unit also provides security for Sheriff's Office and other agencies including the Public Defender's Office, Solicitors Office and the County Clerk of Court. The unit is comprised of armed, sworn officers providing security screening and overall security at these facilities. Courthouse Security is supervised by Captain Steve Jones.
State Court
State Court has concurrent jurisdiction with Superior Court in civil actions except where exclusive jurisdiction is given to the Superior Court by the Georgia Constitution. State Court has criminal jurisdiction on misdemeanor cases.

Superior Court
The Superior Court has jurisdiction in divorce, felony, land-title, equity, adoption, and certain civil suits. The Felony Drug Court, Treatment and Accountability Court, and Veterans Court are also part of the Superior Court. The Southern Judicial Circuit is comprised of five counties; Brooks, Colquitt, Echols, Lowndes and Thomas. This court also handles appeals from the Probate Court.

Magistrate Court
Magistrate Court's jurisdiction encompasses civil claims and garnishments of $15,000 or less, county ordinance violations, applications for and issuance of arrest and search warrants, preliminary hearings, dispossessory writs, and pre-warrants. No jury trials are held in this court. Appeals from decisions in landlord, tenant and civil cases are made to the Superior and State courts.
Our court does not issue restraining orders.

Probate Court
The Probate Court assists the public in taking care of the business affairs of those who have died, or in dealing with family members who are mentally ill, alcoholic, drug-dependent, or otherwise incapacitated, while protecting people who are unable to protect themselves or their property. Probate Court also conducts emergency evaluations for the mentally ill, issues marriage licenses, issues firearms conceal/carry permits, and provides a host of related services.

Clerk of Superior, State & Juvenile Courts
The Clerk of Superior, State, & Juvenile Courts keeps the official records of all civil and criminal actions filed in each court, filed transcribed Courts' minutes, notary appointments, trade name registrations, and filings of DD2-14 forms from the US Military Service personnel. The Clerk of Superior Court is also the official custodian of all land records including liens for Thomas County.

District Attorney
The District Attorney's Office is responsible for prosecuting all criminal offenses, felonies and misdemeanors, as well as certain civil actions such as drug, gambling, and bond forfeitures in the Superior Courts of the Southern Judicial Circuit. These prosecutions, both civil and criminal, are generated primarily by the police agencies operating in and around this jurisdiction.
