The primary purpose of the Thomas County Identification / AFIS Operations Unit (ID Unit) is to systematically document, collect, and preserve physical evidence from a crime scene to aid in the reconstruction of events and the identification of potential suspects. The ID Unit is made up of certified crime scene technicians and certified latent print examiners.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of their role:
Scene Documentation:
ID unit personnel meticulously document the crime scene, taking photographs, measurements, and detailed notes to create a comprehensive record of the crime scene.
Evidence Identification and Collection:
They identify, collect, and preserve physical evidence, such as fingerprints, footprints, bloodstains, fibers, and other trace materials. Fingerprints developed at a crime scene are examined to determine if they are of value for comparison. Prints of value may be compared manually to known prints from victims or known suspects, or they may entered into and searched against the FBI criminal and civil fingerprint database.
Chain of Custody:
Crime Scene Technicians are responsible for maintaining the chain of custody of all evidence collected, ensuring its integrity and admissibility in court.
Evidence Analysis:
Crime Scene Technicians often work with forensic scientists to analyze evidence, helping to determine its significance and relevance to the case.
Expert Testimony:
Crime Scene Technicians / Latent Print Examiners may be called upon to testify in court about their findings and the evidence they collected.
