Thomas County Sheriff's Office and Boston Police Department Conduct Joint Traffic Safety Enforcement Operation
THOMASVILLE, GA - September 9, 2026 - Based on an analysis of traffic crash statistics from January 1 through July 31, 2026, the Thomas County Sheriff's Office identified areas throughout the county where proactive traffic enforcement could help address hazardous driving behaviors and reduce the potential for future crashes.
In response to these findings, the Thomas County Sheriff's Office (TCSO) and the Boston Police Department (BPD) have collaborated to establish a proactive traffic hazard enforcement initiative designed to identify and address areas of concern throughout Thomas County.
As part of this initiative, Boston Police Department officers have been deputized by Thomas County Sheriff Tim Watkins, allowing them to assist Thomas County Sheriff's Office deputies when called upon and providing an additional law enforcement resource for targeted enforcement operations.
The need for these partnerships has become increasingly important as Thomas County continues to experience population growth and an associated increase in the demand for law enforcement services. At the same time, the Thomas County Sheriff's Office continues to operate with staffing limitations. As a result, TCSO must rely on supplemental resources from neighboring and partner law enforcement agencies to conduct proactive enforcement operations while maintaining adequate personnel to respond to calls for service and address the day-to-day needs of the community.
This collaborative approach allows the Sheriff's Office to strategically dedicate additional personnel to areas identified through data analysis without compromising the agency's ability to provide essential law enforcement services throughout the county.
On September 4 and 5, 2026, members of the Thomas County Sheriff's Office and Boston Police Department partnered to conduct the first targeted operation. The initial area of concern identified through crash data was U.S. Highway 19 between U.S. Highway 319 North and U.S. Highway 84 East. The Georgia State Patrol also assisted with the operation, providing additional resources and support.
At the conclusion of the two-day operation, law enforcement officers recorded the following results:
98 traffic contacts, resulting in a warning or other enforcement action
9 DUI arrests
14 total arrests
6 felony drug cases
Sheriff Tim Watkins emphasized that the purpose of the initiative is not simply to increase the number of citations or arrests, but to use available data to strategically identify traffic hazards and proactively address behaviors that contribute to crashes and unsafe roadways.
"Our goal is to take the information we have available to us and put our resources where they can make the greatest impact," Sheriff Watkins said. "Thomas County is growing, and with that growth comes an increased demand for law enforcement services. While we continue working to address our staffing needs, partnerships with other agencies allow us to put additional resources on the road and proactively address problems before they result in more crashes, injuries, or loss of life."
Sheriff Watkins continued, "The results of this first operation demonstrate the value of working together. This is about more than traffic tickets. It is about identifying hazards, removing impaired and dangerous drivers from our roadways, and making our community safer."
The U.S. Highway 19 corridor is only the first area to be addressed through this initiative. Other areas of concern throughout the entirety of Thomas County have been identified and prioritized based on the same traffic crash statistics and data-driven analysis. These areas will be addressed through future targeted operations as resources and agency availability allow.
The Thomas County Sheriff's Office will continue analyzing traffic crash data and other enforcement information to identify and prioritize areas where proactive enforcement may have the greatest impact on roadway safety. Future operations may involve the Thomas County Sheriff's Office, Boston Police Department, Georgia State Patrol, and other law enforcement agencies as needed.
